Matthew first started performing improv in the late 1900s. Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, he performed regularly at the Grand Rapids Civic Theater as a member of the Part of a Complete Breakfast improv troupe and appeared in many scripted productions in other local theaters along the way.
He moved to Ann Arbor for grad school, where he directed the fully improvised one-act Thin Air for Basement Arts and was active in campus improv circles. After earning his PhD in Biostatistics from the University of Michigan, Matthew joined the mainstage cast at Pointless Brewery & Theater, where he also taught advanced longform classes (Harold, Deconstruction) and performed musical improv with Forte Factory.
He later trained at iO Chicago, with additional workshops at The Second City and The Annoyance, before relocating to Boston in 2022. Since then, he’s continued training at Improv Asylum and has performed for two years on House Teams. He is delighted to be teaching at the training center and hopes to pass on both the craft and the chaos of longform to new improvisers.
