Sketch Writing Fundamentals
This introductory sketch writing course is designed to take you from idea generation to your first completed sketches—all while building community and exploring the fundamental principles of comedic writing.
Over eight weeks, you’ll learn how to generate strong sketch premises, structure your ideas into effective scenes, and receive feedback in a supportive, collaborative environment.
Through a blend of lecture, writing exercises, group collaboration, and live reads, you’ll explore different sketch archetypes, comedic techniques, and formats that form the backbone of great comedy writing.
Whether you’re new to sketch or sharpening your skills, this class offers a playful, yet structured space to develop your comedic voice.
Our weekly rhythm includes reading and workshopping student sketches, diving into sketch theory, watching iconic examples, and completing targeted writing assignments.
You’ll leave this class with a handful of original sketches, a deeper understanding of how sketches work, and tools to keep your creative momentum going.

The Writer’s Room Experience
In The Writers’ Room Experience, you’ll collaborate with your fellow writers to craft the second episode (after the pilot) of a brand-new half-hour comedy series, just like real writers do in the biz!
In this 8-week immersive class, you’ll dive right into the energy of the writer’s room, pitching stories and piling on ideas as a group to craft the funniest possible episode.
You’ll learn not just the art of storytelling and the best way to punch up jokes, but also the crucial skills of teamwork and how best to navigate a professional writers’ room.
You’ll also grasp the structure and guidelines of half-hour scriptwriting, so you leave with both the experience and knowledge to write for the small screen.

Frequently Asked Questions - Comedy Writing Classes
Do I need experience to join a writing class?
Nope. If you can write a text, you can write a sketch. We’ll take you from blank page to funny page — no MFA required.
What if I’m not “the funny one” in my friend group?
Even better. Comedy writing is a skill, not a magic gene. We’ll teach you how to build a joke, not just hope lightning strikes.
Will I get homework?
Yes, but it’s the fun kind — writing sketches, pitching ideas, and binge-watching classic comedy for “research.” It’s probably what you’re doing right now.
Do I need to perform?
No, you’ll hear your words read aloud in class, but you don’t have to hop on stage unless you want to.
Wait, do you want to perform? Because we’ve got classes for that, too!
What will I leave with?
Depending on which class you choose… A handful of polished sketches, a working TV pitch, or the experience of surviving a writers’ room. Also bragging rights. Definitely bragging rights.
Can this actually help me break into TV writing?
We can’t guarantee you’ll be the next Shonda Rhimes, but you’ll walk away with the tools, confidence, and a network of fellow comedy nerds who might just be your next favorite collaborators.
